Alcohol and Islam
One of the reasons some of my interviewees mentioned, as predicted in doing preliminary research, for not being involved with Greek Institutions, is that they did not drink alcohol, and therefore did not feel comfortable at some Greek events. Alcohol tends to be a large part of that particular social subculture. Some of my subjects admitted that they were not as strict religiously, and did not abstain from alcohol-use, but others did. In addition, those who abstained from alcohol use abstained for more than religious reasons. Nevertheless, alcohol use is a significant aspect in the narrative of Muslim Americans' experiences and Greek Institutions. A simple explanation of why Muslims abstain from alcohol, is that it is prohibited in the Qu'ran. For a more detailed explanation, check out this article.
